Inclusive culture for people with intellectual disabilities

The inclusive culture project El Sombrero en Bellas Artes has been selected in the third edition of You Make it Possible, a Fundación Repsol initiative through which the Company's shareholders choose a social project to receive financial support to carry out its work.

This project, carried out jointly by Fundación Repsol and the Debajo del Sombrero Association, is committed to bringing those with intellectual disabilities into the world of art using two activities. One is an educational programme which gives eight artists with disabilities the chance to develop their potential as artists in environments like the College of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid. The other activity is a joint project between Fundación Repsol and Debajo del Sombrero to create a studio for artists. This space is a workshop where the association's members can work, and receive professional guidance and support.

As part of the You Make it Possible initiative, a group of shareholders had the chance to learn first-hand about the works these artists create in the workshop at the Matadero arts centre in Madrid. The shareholders saw several of the pieces of art produced, in the company of Lola Barrera, the director of the Debajo del Sombrero Association, and the artists themselves, . They were able to share and experience new forms of expression through painting and sculpture.

Fundación Repsol began supporting this project in 2012, and in 2014 the La Canción Propia exhibition was held at the Círculo de Bellas Artes fine arts centre in Madrid. The exhibition allowed the general public to see these artists' abilities for themselves.
