The US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) differs fundamentally from the EU Green Deal as an industrial policy and response to climate change. The EU quantifies numerous climate targets to set strict limits on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, the U.S. aims to develop new technologies that mitigate climate change competitively than conventional ones through tax credits and market incentives, rather than through heavy regulation. This could put pressure on European countries to adopt similar policies to remain competitive.

This webinar will discuss the effects of the IRA in Europe, taking as a starting point the discussion of the brief produced by EsadeGeo on the topic.

By 2050, the EU aims to be climate neutral, meaning it will emit no net GHGs. This will require a major transformation of the EU economy, moving away from fossil fuels and towards clean energy sources. The private sector will be essential for this transformation.

The aim of this event is to debate the role of the private sector in the decarbonisation of the EU. The event will explore the following questions:

• How can companies invest in clean technologies and adopt them?
• How can companies work together with governments to create a policy environment favorable to decarbonization?
• What are the challenges and opportunities for businesses in decarbonising the EU economy?
• Which is the role of governments in supporting EU reindustrialisation?

In 2015, the Paris Agreement adopted the goal of limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5ºC before the end of the 21st century. This goal was supported from a scientific point of view by the United Nations Special Report on Global Warming in 2018. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to move towards the goal of being net zero emissions by 2050, and Negative Emissions Technologies will be essential.

The Repsol Foundation Energy Transition Chair at the Rovira i Virgili University is organizing this webinar in which these technologies and their CO2 removal potential will be explored.
